Experience
HEENAN DRIVE LTD - WORCESTER UK. 1989 to 1996
Apprentice. Completed a 4 year apprenticeship whist studying, working primarily within the ATE department, testing and repairing PCB’s using Marconi test based systems and worked within the Electronic manufacturing department, on mechanical, and electronic and electrical build, including built, tested and repaired of analogue and digital control board.
Test Technician. Tested and Commissioned pulse width modulation, variable speed inverters. Testing equipment at 415VAC, 600VDC and up to 700KW. Developed knowledge in IGBT and thyristor control technology, microprocessor based systems, low and high voltage fault finding and fault finding and calibration of products. Travelled throughout Europe for installation and repair of the equipment.
Research and Development engineer. Developed and designed electronic circuit boards and test equipment for automatic (ATM) equipment for internal testing of PWM inverters, as well as helping in the development of the next generation products. Responsible for EMC testing on commercial products, including integrating design changes to external radiation and interference.
Nimbus technology of engineering (NTE) June 1996 - 2005
Test and Commissioning Engineer. Joined NTE after being headhunted, joined as an engineer to commission chemical preparation lines for manufacturing thin film photo-resist substrates, used in the manufacture of optical discs. Duties included testing pneumatic, optical, mechanical assemblies and chassis and electronic systems, including automation; as well as programing and calibration of PLC’s. The position also required design and development of test equipment to enable LEAN manufacturing and help implement ISO9001, to enable the company to move forward more efficiently within an expanding business. After 3 months the duties increased to commissioning and service of equipment in North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Duties then increased to Customer support engineer, directly responsible for the 24hour support, being the primary contact for customer and other service engineers and technicians. Trained operating and optimizing in polycarbonate development and molding used in the CD and DVD production.
Laser Beam Recorder Engineer. Internally promotion to Laser beam recorder build, test and commissioning engineer; equipment used in the manufacture of optical disc, in exposing photo resist for sub 400nm features. The primary position, being responsible for the build and test of opto-mechanical, electro-optical, electro-mechanical, optical and mechanical assemblies. Including the commissioning and alignment of the optical components, using Gas Ion lasers at 351nm UV wavelength lasers, calibrating and commissioning the system prior to installation on customer sites. As well as being responsible for the integration and implementation of development parts into production and updating system test documentation.
Senior Engineer. Internally promoted to senior engineer, responsible for whole optical disc product line, senior to 15 engineers and 25 application engineers. Duties included being primary contact with R&D, managing process and engineering development, interfacing between development and manufacturing to ensure integration into the generic product. I was also responsible for the training of engineers and technicians, on new products as well as QA and QC of all equipment prior to shipping.
Senior Engineer/Development Engineer. Internally promoted to senior engineer and senior development engineer, becoming primary contact within Research and Development, working directly with the founding CTO of NTE . Designed and developing opto-mechanical, electro-optical, and electro-mechanical assemblies; including optical and mechanical design for new product lines; these new products incorporating OEM parts as well as in house designed assemblies. I also researched processes for the future development of optical disc including E-Beam technology; Working with Sony, Phillips,Technicolor, and other large manufacturing and development companies in the development of optical disc formats including DVD-R, DVD-RAM, and HD. I was also a primary engineer in the design of the Nimbus PI mastering system that revolutionized the optical disc industry, in the development of turn key mastering with in house designed automation and the use of solid state 405nm diodes; working on optical, mechanical, chemical and process development. With the R&D facility i worked within the Nimbus analytical department, which became a reference facility for the optical disc industry, using OEM test equipment to calibrate and quantify products being manufactured throughout the world; becoming competent in analytical equipment including AFM and SEM’s responsible for the QA and QC of products; enabling development of higher density formats, which later became BluRay.
Developed product for new polycarbonate molding line with Kraussmaffei, Singlus and Meike molds. Developed process for higher cycle time and higher resolution molding.
Optical disc corporation - october 2005 to May 2014
ODC Nimbus purchased Nimbus Technology Of Engineering from Unaxis, after the company merger/buy out, I was asked to head the Research and Development, for the next generation products; including high density (HD) and Blu-ray (BD) mastering at ODC’s head quarters in Santa fe springs CA. From over 150 personal in the UK, I was 1 of only 6 employees were relocated to CA, and the UK facility closed and I am the only one that remains in the US.
Executive Product Manager / Senior R&D Engineer. Internally promoted immediately after relocating to the USA, managing all of the Nimbus product lines, and next generation products. Designing the new equipment in the manufacturing of HD and subsequently BluRay optical discs; enabling ODC Nimbus to be only 1 of two manufacturing company’s able to manufacture BluRay, other than Sony in the world. Primarily designing fluid film bearings and actuators with vendors and optical system...
