ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE

URS/Nuclear Waste Partnership – September 2009 to Present

Nuclear Engineer I/Process Cognizant Engineer/Technical Lead

Serves as the Cognizant Engineer and primary technical point-of-contact for non-destructive assay (NDA) processes, procedures and equipment. Maintains knowledge of waste stream radiological characteristics anticipates future NDA needs and makes recommendations to management regarding equipment needs and WAC implementation/compliance strategies. Develop and status schedules for CCP NDA related projects. Prepares technical reports as necessary for CCP contract deliverables and technical papers in response to customer inquiries. Performs peer reviews of reports and papers prepared by others regarding CCP radiological waste characterization. Address and/or issue corrective measures as needed. Defend tier changes and provide technical support during EPA and DOE inspections and audits. Responsible for determining acceptable paths forward for difficult indeterminate waste by use of model simulation and/or process knowledge.

Recent Work

• Worked with Canberra to develop a Mobile ISOCS Large Container Counter gamma system. The MILCC gamma system replaces current trailer gamma systems saving over three million dollars per unit deployed, while increasing capability and portability.
• Implemented digital gamma spectrometry/spectroscopy to the RH waste program at INL (a WIPP first), allowing TRU material to be scaled and accounted for more accurately. This in turn added increased accuracy to the characterization process for Remote Handled waste (RH).
• Modeled shielding changes to the RH-TRU 72B Shipping Cask allowing for higher neutron dose rate materials to be shipped.
• Worked with Canberra to implement a new counting configuration at the Savannah River Site on the Large Box Counter that allows the counter to assay waste that in the past has been categorized as indeterminate.
• Project Management, Scheduling, and cost control in new projects ensuring all requirements are met in the beginning phases of the project.

Space Engineering Research Center (SERC)/Interphase Transport Phenomena Laboratory (ITP) – June 2007 to August 2009

Sr. Laboratory Research Assistant

Responsible for the oversight of multiple projects. Research ranged from testing new working fluids (including molten salts and anhydrous ammonia) for various thermal cycles as well as the development of specialized compact boilers, separators, radiators, and various heat pipe systems to be used in gravitational challenging environments and alternative commercial energy systems. Writing daily reports to the appropriate Research Managers as to the progress made and communicating potential problems. Work within strict guidelines and procedures as dictated or provided by various Department of Defense (DOD) and DOE organizations. Procurement of raw materials needed to fabricate, build, and test experiments. Responsible for fabrication and testing custom parts. Analyze data and report results in a meaningful manner to the appropriate organization. Also responsible for the calibration of flow meters, transducers, and various other instrumentation. Oversee and train new research assistants.
