US Army Missile Command, 1985 to 1996
Redstone Arsenal, AL  35898
Electronics Engineer, 2LT to GS-13
Designed radar systems for missile guidance

Accomplishments:

Led an engineering team to build a radar from the ground up (the Rapid Cueing Sensor).  The team successfully demonstrated the acquisition of targets and the handoff of target coordinates to an adjacent weapon system.  I personally was responsible for the RF hardware, the target acquisition alogorithm and DSPs, and the target simulator while simultaneously directing the rest of the team in developing the scanning hardware, the data acquisition hardware, the decorrelator, the FFT hardware, and the data interfaces.  (US Army)

Designed hundreds of antenna iterations for dozens of customers producing tens of millions of antennas and generating tens of millions of dollars in revenue. (Centurion)

Established my company’s credibility for antenna measurements, as stated by our customer.  I coordinated installation of the tapered anechoic chamber; wrote software, controlled hardware, and measured reflectivity per IEEE standard 149-1979.  (Centurion)

Setup measurement procedures for outdoor antenna measurement in the VHF and UHF frequency bands. (Centurion)

Awarded 11 patents.  Most of the patents involved working with an engineering team of mechanical and electrical engineers.  (Centurion)
              Coupled meander line switched antenna
              Satellite (2)
              3D pattern measurement hardware
              PIFA antenna contacts
              Modified Wheeler cap (2)
              Coaxial monopole (2)
              Design patent
              SAR reduction antenna

Made possible, through flaw detection, a new type of antenna/audio module.  I specified hardware and wrote signal processing software to detect acceptable audio performance of the antenna/audio modules.   The result was millions of dollars of revenue on several different programs. (Centurion)

Assembled RF hardware and configured data acquisition methods for measurement of propagation effects.  The results of several types of measurements were crucial for determining feasibility of several types of weapons systems.  In some cases the propagation effects were shown to have minimal effect on missile guidance.  In other cases, the entire weapon system had to be redesigned because of the propagation effects. The conclusions were used to save hundreds of millions of dollars by preventing the continuation of the program. (US Army)

Modified an instrumentation radar, changing it into an angle tracking radar.  Debugged and adjusted range tracking circuits that were added to the instrumentation radar.  Applied weighting coefficients to improve range sidelobes of the frequency hopping instrumentation radar.  (US Army)

Designed 4-layer RF printed circuit board (PCB) to demonstrate the coupled meander line switched antenna patent concept.  The central concept was to include DC bias lines in the meander antenna that functioned as RF antenna elements while simultaneously supplying DC bias voltage.  The bias lines switched PIN diodes on the antenna element to change the electrical length of the meander line antenna elements.  The main PCB included bias selection logic, voltage regulation, decoupling components, a varactor for fine tuning, DC blocking capacitors, and RF blocking inductors (bias T‘s).  (Centurion)

Developed troubleshooting procedure to isolate and remedy EMI that was inhibiting proper functioning of a cabin selector switch. Three solutions were uncovered. Based on the cost to implement, 2 of three solutions were applied depending on an aircraft's phase of assembly. (Duncan Aviation)
