PROFILE

Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering searching for a systems-level position in a globally significant firm. Eight years experience in aerospace, five years in academia, three in mining and metals, and two in medical devices contributing products from conception to end of life. Proficient in every major computer system, knowledgeable of manufacturing techniques and well versed in complex analysis. Served as primary architect for major flight systems and health monitoring products. Accustomed to work in a team. Proven communication and troubleshooting skills.

HIGHLIGHTS OF CAREER

• Developed new method of quantifying machine health for large surface mining equipment with lifetime extension of 34%
• Prototyped a new needle insertion instrument (cannula) to enable previously impossible surgical access
• Patented new haptic computer interface based on thesis research at Northwestern University
• Developed flight and ground systems for several NASA space missions, including NEAR Shoemaker and TIMED

Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, 2012 - present
Systems Analyst position in Advanced Development, Contributing to advanced generations of the surgical robot and its accompanying simulator.

WBM BMT Consulting Engineers Inc., Centennial, CO, 2007 – 2011
Conducting problem solving and engineering for the mining and metals industry, focusing on analytical damage and fatigue analysis for dragline, shovel, and other surface mining equipment. Responsible for conducting field engineering tests for troubleshooting, as well as designing and implementing new health and performance monitoring products for the Denver branch (North America). Clients see extended lifetimes and value our systems that catch problems before catastrophic failure, typically a five-times cost savings. Experience with product design, troubleshooting, sensor installation, analysis, FEA.

At Boston University Dynamics and Control Laboratory, Boston, MA, 2004 - 2005
The Bioengineering Research Partnership (BRP) is a joint NIH program between BU, Harvard, and Boston Children’s Hospital that aims to enhance pediatric cardiac surgery with robotics and new instrumentation. Among other tools, developed a new needle insertion instrument, or steerable cannula, made of NiTi (Nitinol) that allows for real-time trajectory correction. Mentored students towards their academic goals and tested new instruments with research surgeons.

At Northwestern University Laboratory for Intelligent Mechanical Systems, Evanston, IL, 2000 – 2004
Thesis work centered on a subset of robotics called haptics where the human controller experiences touch sensations related to the task. Pioneered a new branch of research called “Fingertip Haptics” that focuses on sensations at the fingertip. Conceived and built custom robotic test apparatus from scratch used by over 120 test subjects. Wrote and won NSF grant that funded thesis research. Mentored students in all aspects of engineering.
• Received Cabell fellowship for first year of work
• During my graduate studies, served as assistant to expert witness in a haptics-related lawsuit where plaintiff successfully settled against separate defendants for $34M and $86M

At Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, MD, 1997 – 1999
Contributed to several NASA space missions, including NEAR Shoemaker and TIMED, and was the principal investigator for the Advanced Technology Development program focusing on autonomous software architectures. Primary responsibilities included developing the automatic embedded code generator from Simulink (RTW) for use on the onboard attitude control flight software processors. Contributed to the ground simulator (flat-sat) for NEAR to validate in-flight software changes. Satellite was the first to land on an asteroid. Experience with several software languages, software development packages and various hardware

At the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, Boulder, CO, 1991 – 1997
Contributed to command and control ground software system OASIS-CC until leading the embedded flight software effort f...
